A shell jacket is one of the most useful outerwear garments when the weather changes. It works as a thin jacket for children that protects against wind and rain, while also breathing and letting moisture out when the child moves. At Villervalla, you will find shell jackets for children with thoughtful details for everyday life, preschool and outings - in many colourful patterns and styles that are easy to match.
Our shell jackets are unpadded and made for layer-on-layer dressing: on milder days, the jacket is enough on its own, and if it gets colder, you can easily add a warming layer underneath - for example one of our fleece jackets. This gives the child both weather protection and warmth without the jacket feeling heavy or bulky.
Shell jackets are a smart choice when you want an outerwear garment that works in many situations: on the way to preschool, during the school day, on forest walks or when it is windy and drizzly. A good waterproof shell jacket for children protects from the outside while helping the child stay comfortable by releasing moisture from the inside.
Many of our shell jackets are developed to work in practice, which is why you will often find these features in the range:
Many people search for wind jacket for children or thin jacket for children when they really want a garment that can handle more than just wind. A shell jacket is often a more flexible choice because it is built to handle changeable weather while also working with layers underneath. This means it can be used for much of the year.
Villervalla's shell jackets are unpadded and work as a flexible outer layer that protects against wind and rain. When it gets colder, it is easy to adapt warmth with layer-on-layer dressing - for example by wearing a fleece jacket under the shell jacket. This gives you the feeling of a more padded jacket, but with the advantage that you can vary warmth depending on weather and activity.
How to dress your child with a shell jacket:
This makes the shell jacket one of the most useful garments of the year and perhaps best of all - you do not need to buy “one jacket per weather”.
Our outerwear does not contain perfluorinated substances (such as PFOS/PFOA). Instead, solutions such as polyurethane membrane/coating are used (depending on style) to stop water from the outside and help the garment breathe.
A few tips from us to preserve function and fit for longer:
Is a shell jacket the same as a wind jacket for children?
No, a shell jacket is more advanced in function. It is both windproof and waterproof with taped seams, while a regular wind jacket usually only resists wind and light drizzle.
Are Villervalla's shell jackets fully waterproof?
Yes, with an 8,000 mm water column and taped seams, they count as fully waterproof and can handle a full day of play in the rain.
What are taped seams and why are they important?
When a jacket is sewn, small holes are created by the needle. Taped seams mean that a waterproof strip has been applied over these holes on the inside to ensure that no water leaks in.
How breathable is a shell jacket?
Our jackets have breathability of 5,000 g/m²/24h. This means they effectively transport moisture away, so the child avoids the sticky feeling that rubberised rainwear can sometimes give.
Should I choose a padded or unpadded shell jacket?
We recommend unpadded! It is the most flexible option. You can easily control the warmth yourself by adding or removing a fleece jacket underneath, which means the jacket works from spring to autumn.
Do you need to reproof a shell jacket?
Yes, after a few washes it may be needed. If you notice that water no longer beads on the fabric but is absorbed, it is time for a PFC-free reproofing spray.
Does Villervalla have solid-colour shell jackets?
Yes, we have both our classic colourful patterns and stylish solid-colour styles that are easy to match with our shell and softshell trousers.
