Velvet, velour and plush are all soft and luxurious fabrics used in clothing. Velvet is an elegant fabric with short and dense pile. It is appreciated for its unique luster and rich texture that reflects light beautifully. The material in classic, high-quality velvet is silk, but it can also be produced from cotton, rayon or synthetic fibers. Velvet is often used for formal wear, upholstery and decorative pillows or curtains.
Velour resembles velvet, but has longer pile. It is usually made of cotton or synthetic fibers and can be both stretchy and stiff, the elasticity can become greater than in velvet since the textile is knitted. An extra warp forms loops that are cut open on one side, giving the velour its characteristic pile on the fabric. The pile is fulled and napped until it is really soft. The feel of velour is also a bit luxurious, but above all very comfortable. This contributes to it often being used for comfortable clothes such as tracksuits, hoodies and soft dresses.
Plush is often used synonymously with velour, and the fabrics give the same soft and warm feel. But the manufacturing processes differ and where plush has a short pile and "furry" feel, velour has longer pile and is more structured. Plush is durable and is often used for toys and interior details but also clothes.
