Shell clothes should be called super clothes, since they can be used in all kinds of weather. They are perfect as the outer layer in the layer-on-layer-principle. By adjusting layers underneath, you can wear shell clothes all year round. They are comfy, durable, wind- and water resistant… and breathable!

Shell clothes - how does it work?

Inside shell clothes you will find a breathable membrane or coating, which keeps the moisture out. This is because of the membrane's small pores that release the steam, while keeping water droplets out. The outer layer consists of textile. The water column will tell you how much water the garment can withstand.

Water column is a measurement method that indicates how much water pressure the material can handle before it lets moisture through from the outside. This is measured in millimeters, where a higher value withstands more water. Our shell clothes have 8000 in water column, which means that the fabric is waterproof yet breathable.

What's the best choice; shell jacket with shell pants or a shell overall?

Smaller children sit a lot (pram, sandbox etc.) and therefor an overall is a smooth alternative. An overall has no elastics by its waist and a jacket might feel chunky. 

For the older children, on the other hand, a shell jacket combined with shell pants are most flexible; if it gets too hot, the jacket or trousers can be easily removed.

7 desirable functions to look for 

Some functions give extra high scores in our opinion:

1. First of all: Shell clothes should always be durable, breathable and waterproof. 
2. We recommend taped seams so that water doesn't penetrate the small holes at the seam.
3. A detachable hood falls off if the child gets stuck with it. Also, sometimes it's actually comfy to go without. 
4. With reflexes on the legs and cuffs the child gets more visible. Don't forget to complete with lights if it's dark outside!
5. PFC-free materials and garments that are manufactured in the most sustainable way possible is better for the environment, as well as that the garments will last longer and can be inherited by siblings.
6. It's an advantage if the shell clothes are spacious and not tight (it's a difference between spacious and too big), so the child has full freedom of movement and give space to intermediate layers underneath.
7. Detachable foot elastics are easy to take off if you don't want them. And should they break, they can easily be replaced with new ones.
